Trust me... really... Trust me...

$700 billion on the table, and Bush and his side-kicks say, more or less, "Trust Me".  Hmm... seems like the WMD line played over again, only this time closer to home.   What's a real kicker to me is that Ben Bernanke says we might be buying the "toxic" assets (ie. sub-prime loans and the like) at a price that's higher than book value.  I'm sorry... I'm just a poor computer geek...but this sure sounds like we are going to be rewarding those lending institutions that got us in a mess by offering garbage mortgages.  I suppose it makes sense to Bush and his pals: get the WMD word out and your buddies in Halliburton make a bundle.  Get the US taxpayer on the hook for the garbage loans and your investment bank buddies make a bundle.  At least it's consistent.

Speaking of banking buddies...

As reported in the NY Times:
Senator John McCain’s campaign manager was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations, current and former officials say.

McCain's been saying "Oh, that's not true".  Guess what.   Turns out the guy's company was getting that money just a few weeks ago.  Straight Talk Express, indeed.

And while we're on a McCain roll...

An AP story tells us about Biden calling out McCain:

In his second trip in four days to this battleground state Tuesday, Biden said McCain promised to oppose any efforts to close a "Bermuda loophole" where American companies shielded $4 billion to $7 billion from U.S. taxes.

My, my, my...

Well, work calls, but I just have to compliment Palin on her hard-hitting meetings with foreign leaders.  "So, how's your family?" was one of the questions.  President Palin, that scares me.
