The Price of Civilization

Thomas Friedman had a great op-ed piece in the NY Times in which he quotes Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes:
I like paying taxes.  With them I buy civilization.
That pretty well sums up my feelings.  McCain and company seem to be saying, and saying over and over and over again, taxes = evil.  My feelings are mis-allocated taxes = evil.  In last night's debate we heard Barack emphasizing that his plan reallocates the tax burden.  The upper percentage start carrying some of the freight, and the middle class and small business (that's pretty much you and me) gets some breathing room.  Bottom line is, someone has to pay taxes.  The money for $700 billion (or is it $800 billon now?  I lost track.) bailouts doesn't just magically appear, though the conjuring of money seems to have been the Bush policy (see: National Debt hits 53-year high).  Forget about the bailout for now.  What about Iraq?  It costs money to fight wars.  In previous wars we had war bonds.  Everyone, and I mean everyone, kicked in to pay for things.  Trickle down economics cut the taxes on the rich and payed for things by putting a burden on the future with out of control borrowing.  The bottom line is that we have to fund out country now.  We have to face the music and start paying off some of this debt and paying off our on-going expenses.

Summary?

McCain Plan = Not Fair

Obama Plan = Fair

"You pay's your money and you takes your chances."  I'll go with the guy that gives me value for services.
