Stone Wall

Not so much a stone wall as a black-hole-in-front-of-you-sucking-all-the-logic-out-of-the-room kind of wall.  (And I bet THAT wrapped nicely on your screen, eh?)

I got back last night from giving training to a customer in Columbus, Ohio.  I've worked with a gal down there for ages and a day.  Love her dearly, but talking to her about Obama was like yelling in an anechoic chamber.  The words came out of my mouth and just seemed to dissipate into nothingness.  I rolled out my best arguments, but I fear for naught.

Is it because Barack's black, but she just doesn't want to say that she's never going to vote for a black guy?  Is it because he's a Democrat and by-God, she's never going to vote for one of them?  Even the "Can you really say 'President Palin' and not shudder??" had no effect.

Maybe it is the whole idea of change.  Not change in the way Barack means it, but any change.  McCain is that solid old uncle in the other room that represents the way things are.  Sarah, God bless her (!), is the mom down the street.  Maybe they just look so "normal" that they are the comfortable choice.

Perhaps that's it...  the "comfortable choice".  You get to turn off your BS detector, you can shut down your scare detector, and just be "comfortable".   You don't have to think about Barack's "change we can believe in".  You don't have to think about change at all.

I suppose she thinks I'm some kind of lefto long-hair nut case...maybe I am...but at least I think about it.  And I think I'm going to have an upset stomach until election day ends and Barack and Joe and on their way to the Executive Branch.

I've a similar problem (and Jewel E's is even worse) understanding why the approval ratings for Bush are about 20%. It seems incredible to me that 1 in 5 people actually like the job he's doing.

Did you actually ask why she was favoring McCain? I've asked similar questions (other campaigns, mind you) and gotten some surprising results.

Like a neighbor who was going to vote Republican because they thought it would keep their taxes lower. When their income is so low they aren't paying taxes.

Not sure why people get these peculiar (to me) fixations. I read What's The Matter With Kansas and didn't see anything that actually explained WHY people voted against their own interest, other than being sold a bill of goods on other issues (and maybe that's enough).

I do occasionally wonder what fixations I have that others can't understand.
